Tay had a Flat Stanley that his class sent everywhere. He sent him to Alaska with his aunt and still talks about it. -Such a fun idea!

We took Jenna's Flat Stanley to the Smokey Mountain National Park in North Carolina. Grandma Lois, Bruce and I had met Uncle John and Aunt Janice in Ashville. It was fun to find spots to add him into the picture. While visiting part of the park with a small wildlife refuge, Aunt Janice and I encountered a black bear out walking in the trees just 50 feet away from our pathway. Flat Stanley wouldn't get out of my pocket for a photo. He said that he was too scared! We later learned that the bear had been born at this refuge, and at about one yar old was released way up in the mountains to live naturally. But he decided he like the handouts from all the zoo visitors, so he had found his way back "home". We had happened along just as he was walking back to his cage. All three of us stopped and eyed each other - I imagine he was as scared as us, but I didn't want to count on it. We stood very, very still; yelled for help; and waited about 20 min for the zoo keepers to get him under control. It was an interesting and scary experience.
